What is CivicIndex?
CivicIndex makes Nantucket's public meetings searchable. We transcribe every recorded meeting and let you ask questions in plain English — or in Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, and 100+ other languages. No more scrolling through hours of video. Get the answer you need in seconds, with a link to the exact moment it was said.
Why we built it
Nantucket records every public meeting. Almost nobody watches them. The decisions that affect your street, your property, your neighborhood are buried in hours of video that most people will never sit through. We built CivicIndex so you don't have to.
How it works
1. Meetings get recorded. Select Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Finance Committee, Conservation Commission — every public meeting on record.
2. Every word gets transcribed and indexed. Timestamped, searchable, tied to the agenda item it came from.
3. You ask. You get the answer, and the source. Every answer links back to the exact moment in the video it came from. No black box.
Transparency & accuracy
Every answer includes timestamped citations. Click any citation to jump to that exact moment in the source video. If we don't have enough information to answer your question, we'll tell you instead of guessing. All transcripts come from official public meeting recordings.
Independence
CivicIndex is an independent project. We are not affiliated with the Town of Nantucket or any municipal government. We use publicly available meeting recordings to make local government more accessible.
